We are enthused to be offering more guided wild boar hunts on our 37, 650 acre Dye Creek Preserve this winter and spring. Their numbers are up and we've had two consecutive good acorn crops, so conditions are very positive for this great game species. So far we have taken many hunters and they have all tagged out the first day! We are booking weekend hunts from now until the end of May for a minimum of two or four hunters. These guided trips are two hunters per guide. So if you need a big game fix during the next few months, give us a call.
The blacktail deer season was sub-par to our standards due to lack of weather pushing the deer off their summer range; however, some great bucks were harvested nevertheless. The 2008 Grant Malcomson Big Buck Award goes to Nick Guichard, so his next hunt is on us.
The bird hunting at Dye Creek has remained very popular over the last few years. The Rio Grande turkey hunting has improved. Turkey hunts are fully guided affairs while the other bird programs on done on an unguided basis. The September opener for the mourning dove hunting went well and with limits being the average for sportsmen that stayed in the filed all day. We currently have 2009 openings for the dove opener in September. Depending on the weather conditions, there can be some fast and furious shooting for these challenging birds. The California quail hunting was considered average for 2008. Dye Creek is one of the few large ranches in California that offer unguided quail hunts. The waterfowl hunting in 2008 was very hit and miss; however hunters harvested over 450 birds, which is average for the Preserve. Stormy weather is conducive to good waterfowl hunting versus bluebird weather, which can be quite challenging, therefore resulting in an inconsistent season.
Renting out the Dye Creek Lodge to families and small functions has become quite popular. Some of the holiday dates are already booked for 2009; however there are plenty of openings throughout the year if you want a great getaway or a unique setting for a meeting, special party or wedding. If you fish on the Sacramento River, the lodge is a great place to stay.
